As the back-to-school season kicks off, it’s a great time to prioritize the safety and well-being of our youth. This month reminds us to stay vigilant about safety concerns and to explore preventative measures and resources that can help support a safe return to campus for young people. Let’s work together to empower our youth, ensuring they have access to the services and support they need to thrive in their educational journey.

#JoinTheCircle! We’re excited to announce that our Oakland office will be hosting a Back to School Drive from 10 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Saturday, this week.

It’s first come, first served! So, swing by and pick up a backpack filled with school supplies. Each household can grab up to 2 backpacks.

If you are a client or guardian with students in the house ready to learn, come through—we got you! We can’t wait to see you there!

The 9th National Conference on Community and Restorative Justice, hosted by @nacrjusa, in Washington D.C. brought together thousands of restorative practitioners across the country.

We are still reminiscing on the incredible, and restorative week our staff members shared at the conference.

A few standout moments:

✅ The wonderful opening plenaries that set the tone for the week!
✅ @project_what’s presentation about creating healing spaces for young people who have a loved one currently/formerly incarcerated
✅ Leaning into the power of storytelling through art, seen through the incredible canvas art
✅ Our very own Co-Ed, Kyle Magallanes Castillo, sharing insights on RJ policy in California
✅ Seeing old, and new friends!

The 9th National Conference on Community and Restorative Justice, hosted by @NACRJ, takes us to Washington, D.C., a city that wields considerable influence on national and international affairs and is a place with deeply rooted community activism and movement-making.

Our ProjectWhat! team @OscarCalderonLeon @JakaelaFoster @LhagaDingpontsawa will be presenting at the NACRJ conference. Their presentation will cover their expertise working with young people who have loved ones’ currently, or formerly incarcerated: “Building Better Adult Allies: Understanding and Supporting Youth with Incarcerated Parents” (Session #13).

Our Restorative Justice Diversion Program Manager @SondraSantana will be presenting in collaboration with @Ahimsa Collective: “Surrogacy in Restorative Justice: An Expansion of Healing Opportunities or a Shift Away from a Restorative Center” (Session # 91).

Our Co-Executive Director @KyleMagallanesCastillo will be presenting:”The California RJ Policy Coalition—A Story of Building Power and Political Agency in a Restorative Way” (Session #117).

The DMV region serves as an example of the transformative power of deliberate, local initiatives. This tapestry of history, cultural diversity, and innovation makes the DMV an ideal place to explore the past, present, and future of community and restorative justice.

This event will take place July 29 - August 1. Learn more about the conference theme, speakers, tracks, agenda and more, and register at the official NACRJ conference website!: https://shorturl.at/agky5

Your presence will help make this event an inspiring and transformative gathering! See you at NACRJ in DC!
